On February 14, 2007, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning to consumers about a possible link between Peter Pan® peanut butter and a recent salmonella outbreak. Though the FDA recommended that consumers immediately discontinue use and discard all Peter Pan® peanut butter containers with a product code (found on the lid) beginning with "2111," at least 288 cases across 39 states had already been linked to the product's contamination.

The warning also extended to Great Value peanut butter brands bearing the same initial product code. Both Peter Pan® and Great Value peanut butter products are manufactured in the same Georgia facility operated by ConAgra, which also announced a voluntary recall shortly following the FDA warning.

Currently, there have been no deaths connected with the outbreak, but several individuals have required urgent medical attention and hospitalization after ingesting Peter Pan® and Great Value brands peanut butter tainted with salmonella.

Symptoms of Salmonella Poisoning

Salmonella is a type of bacteria generally found in undercooked or improperly handled poultry or eggs. Typically the bacteria settle in the stomach and intestines which then become inflamed, bringing about the symptoms of salmonella poisoning (or gastroenteritis). In the case of the Peter Pan® salmonella outbreak, contamination has been attributed to the use of dirty containers or equipment since manufacturing the peanut butter requires the prime ingredient (peanuts) to be heated to germ-killing temperatures.
