Potentially Fatal Side Effects Linked to Xarelto
The blood thinner Xarelto has been linked to serious side effects, including bleeding and clotting episodes after taking the drug. If you or a loved one has suffered a serious adverse event after taking Xarelto, you may be able to file a lawsuit and seek financial compensation from the drug's manufacturer for your injuries.
What is Xarelto?
First approved by the FDA in 2011, Xarelto (rivaroxaban) is a blood thinner with three primary uses: reducing the risk of blood clots and stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation, treating deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolisms and reducing the risk of blood clots in patients undergoing knee or hip replacement surgery.
In patients who have an increased risk of developing blood clots, an anticoagulant like Xarelto may be prescribed. After taking a blood thinner, like Xarelto, patients must be very careful to avoid injury, as the body will no longer be able to form clots naturally. This could lead to a patient developing severe blood loss after a relatively minor injury.
Problems with Xarelto
Older blood thinners like warfarin (Coumadin) allowed doctors to reverse the blood thinners effects with a shot of an antidote. This shot would counteract the effect of the warfarin and would allow a patient's blood to start clotting naturally again.
Xarelto has no such antidote - a person who suffers an injury or needs surgery will not be able to reverse the medication and begin clotting naturally. This can make patients who take Xarelto more susceptible to problems like internal bleeding, uncontrollable hemorrhages, or even death.
In addition, some Xarelto patients have reported suffering from greater numbers of blood clots after taking the medication, which has led to strokes, embolisms, and other sometimes fatal side effects.
Patients and doctors are reporting increasing numbers of adverse side effects as the use of Xarelto become more common. Xarelto is currently prescribed more than twice as often as the next newest blood thinner, Pradaxa.
You and your family rely on your doctor and your medication to keep you healthy. If Xarelto's manufacturer failed to inform you or your doctor of the potential side effects, or you suffered unforeseen adverse reactions after taking Xarelto, you may have grounds to file a lawsuit.
