Causes of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal tunnel syndrome has been identified to appear from a combination of genetic and environmental factors. It has also been recognized that men are less susceptible to carpal tunnel syndrome than their women counterparts. It is suggested that this is caused by women typically having smaller wrists than men.
Some causes of carpal tunnel syndrome include:
- Bone Spurs
- Bursitis
- Diabetes
- Heavy Manual Labor
- Hypothyroidism
- Obesity
- Pregnancy
- Repetitive Light Tasks
- Tendinitis
- Vibrating Tools
- Wrist Injuries
If you believe you may be suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome and experience or have experienced any of the previous causes, it is recommended to seek medical attention, for these medical documents may help our attorneys achieve the workers compensation benefits you deserve.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Symptoms
Typically people suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome will experience a number of different symptoms in a variety of locations of the hand and wrist. As previously mentioned, these symptoms are caused by the median nerve of the wrist becoming compressed when it passes between the two heads of the pronator teres in the forearm. Depending on the severity, it can cause many different types of symptoms.
Some carpal tunnel symptoms include:
- Burning
- Loss of Grip Strength
- Numbness
- Pain in the Wrists or hands
- Tingling
In most cases, these symptoms will appear in the middle fingers, and the radial half of the ring fingers, due to the median nerve being associated with these areas.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Treatments
As there are a variety of causes, and symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome, which also affect different areas in each individual, there are many treatment options available. The treatment option selected by your physician will most likely be the most used option to treat your specific type of carpal tunnel syndrome.
Some carpal tunnel syndrome treatments include:
- Corticosteroids<
Corticosteroids may provide temporary relief from the symptoms associated with carpal tunnel syndrome. Of course, this treatment option is not recommended for long periods of time and should only be used until further treatment options are identified, including surgery.
- Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy includes doing nerve gliding exercises, carpal bone mobilization, yoga, magnetic therapy, ultrasounds, and splinting. These methods are intended to reduce stress on the wrists and reduce the pain and strain associated with carpal tunnel syndrome.
- Splints
Splints are used to immobilize the wrist to reduce the stress applied to the area. This may be used in conjunction with corticosteroid or physiotherapy treatment options.
- Surgery
Surgery on carpal tunnel syndrome is typically known as carpal tunnel release surgery and is recommended when there is muscle weakness, atrophy, numbness, and nothing is able to keep the pain and strain away.
These are simply a few of the most commonly used treatment options for carpal tunnel syndrome. It is advised to speak with your physician if you believe you are suffering from this condition.
Occupations Associated with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Throughout the United States, the lifetime cost of living with carpal tunnel syndrome is around $30,000, which includes medical expenses and lost wages.
