In 2014, a large new study found that prescription testosterone raised the risk of heart attacks among older men and in middle-aged men with a history of heart disease. Increased risk of heart attack was just one of many other serious side effects, which include:

The most recent study on testosterone therapy published in the PLoS ONE Journal, and funded by the National Institutes of Health, analyzed the rate of heart attacks among 56,000 men who were prescribed testosterone between 2008 and 2010. Men over the age of 65 had double the rate of heart attacks in the months after starting the drug as did the men under 65 with a history of heart disease.

An additional study published in The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) found that older men with a history of heart disease had a nearly 30 percent increase in heart attack, stroke and mortality after using testosterone.

Although Low T therapy is supposed to increase testosterone, some men found that they developed a condition called gynecomastia. This condition can lead to enlarged breasts, tenderness, pain and nipple discharge.

The Food & Drug Administration is now looking into FDA-approved testosterone products and how they affect mens health.
