Common Types of Low T Therapy
Testosterone therapy can increase a mans energy, sex drive and muscle mass as well as aide in their sleep cycle. Some common types of therapy include:
- Oral tablets
- Intramuscular injections
Some popular brand name testosterone products include (but are not limited to):
- Android 10
- Android 25
- Bio-T Gel
Gels are the most popular form of Low T therapy and is used by approximately 70 percent of men, according to the Urology Care Foundation. However, the use of gels has become questionable as some physicians believe they raise testosterone levels too high and the side effects could be dangerous.
Testosterone Therapy Side Effects
In 2014, a large new study found that prescription testosterone raised the risk of heart attacks among older men and in middle-aged men with a history of heart disease. The findings were just one of several in recent years that highlighted the serious side effects of testosterone gels, patches and injections.
Increased risk of heart attack was just one of many other serious side effects, which include:
- Enlarged prostate
- Blood clots in the legs
- High blood pressure
- Increased cholesterol levels
- Lower sperm count
- Skin irritations
- Sleep apnea
- Increase risk of prostate cancer
The most recent study on testosterone therapy published in the PLoS ONE Journal, and funded by the National Institutes of Health, analyzed the rate of heart attacks among 56,000 men who were prescribed testosterone between 2008 and 2010. Men over the age of 65 had double the rate of heart attacks in the months after starting the drug as did the men under 65 with a history of heart disease.
An additional study published in The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) found that older men with a history of heart disease had a nearly 30 percent increase in heart attack, stroke and mortality after using testosterone.
Although Low T therapy is supposed to increase testosterone, some men found that they developed a condition called gynecomastia. This condition can lead to enlarged breasts, tenderness, pain and nipple discharge.
The Food & Drug Administration is now looking into FDA-approved testosterone products and how they affect mens health.
