According to the Hearing Health Foundation, about 48 million people in the United States suffer from hearing loss in at least one ear. As millions of Americans continue to suffer from this sensory loss, more and more attention is being placed on the accidents and personal injury cases that cause these life changing health issues.
Currently, approximately 20 percent of the U.S. population ages 12 and above are suffering from hearing loss that is serious enough to alter communication. Lost hearing affects many more individuals than what is commonly believed. Tragic accidents causing catastrophic injuries are often linked to lost hearing in personal injury cases.
In total, about 12 percent of the American population suffers from some form of hearing loss. While the severity of lost hearing greatly influences ones ability to perform daily functions and communicate regularly, any kind of impairment to ones hearing is subject to compensation from those who have caused the accident and/or injury.
At Phillips Law Group, our injury attorneys are experienced, passionate, and determined to seek justice for those accident victims who have suffered from permanent, temporary, or partial hearing loss. Signs of Hearing Loss
According to the Hearing Loss Association of America, hearing loss varies in several degrees: mild, moderate, severe, and profound. In addition, lost hearing can be either permanent or temporary depending upon the specific cause of injury, as well as the severity of that injury. Due to the fact that hearing loss is an invisible condition, accident victims sometimes have a difficult time self-diagnosing some forms of hearing loss.
While not visible to the human eye, accident victims must look out for the following signs of hearing loss following a personal injury of any kind:
- Muffled hearing
- Listening to TV or radio a louder volumes
- Trouble understanding words, especially in situations where much background noise is present
- Removal from conversations
- Avoiding social situations
- Hearing someone talking, but having an inability to determine particular words
- Ringing or buzzing in ears
- Itching in ears
- Ear irritation
- Pain in ears
- Fluid or pus seeping from ears
The above are the most common symptoms associated with hearing loss. These signs often affect the accident victim in a number of ways. Socially, these sufferers feel withdrawn and excluded from typical conversation that they previously understood and participated in. This can cause personal injury victims to become depressed. In addition, those who suffer from hearing loss often feel these effects both emotionally and physically.
If you or a loved one has suffered hearing loss following any type of personal injury in Phoenix, an Arizona personal injury attorney is here to help you.
Causes of Hearing Loss
While the relationship between age and hearing loss is strong, catastrophic events and injuries are another major contributor to hearing loss, especially in young children and adults. Causes of hearing loss range in severity, just as do the actual hearing impairments. As sound wave vibrations are converted in a persons brain, nerve signals are sent that are acknowledged as sound. However, any obstruction to this process can cause a hearing loss of some form.
Some of the most common causes of hearing loss include but are not limited to:
- Earwax buildup
- Inner ear damages
- Abnormal Bone Growth
- Abnormal Tumors
- Eardrum Rupture
- Traumatic Brain Injury
A number of additional catastrophic injuries have also been connected to hearing loss and deafness. If you or a loved one has suffered from any level of lost hearing after a Phoenix accident, an Arizona personal injury attorney may be able to recover compensation in which you are entitled.

Two family members were in a bad wreck a couple of years ago, and as a result called Phillips Law to represent them. Montana Thompson was the attorney assigned to the case with the help of Nemo Farr as legal assistant. Mr. Thompson litigated a very generous settlement for both my stepdaughter and her son. Because my grandson is a minor, I decided to act as conservator for him to ensure the settlement was safe and secure. Montana helped with that process, but it was Nemo who went way above and beyond the call in finding a financial institution to use for the restricted account. There were some glitches in that process but Nemo helped navigate them with a calm expertise which belies his age. I would consider them both great representatives of the level of commitment to their clients and assets to their firm.
Liz Gonzales was great!!!!
Positive: Professionalism, Quality, Responsiveness, Value As someone who is familiar with the inner workings of the auto insurance industry I can whole heartedly endorse Steven J. Jones and Phillips law group as someone I would want on my side should litigation take place. They handled my case professionally, honestly, and with satisfactory results which I would not have expected without enlisting their help.
