Popular dialysis products, GranuFlo and NaturaLyte, have been linked to an increased risk of cardiopulmonary arrest and sudden cardiac death. Manufacturer of the products, Fresenium Medical Care (FMC) failed to warn patients and doctors of the dangers associated with the drugs until this year, even though there is documented evidence that they were aware of the risks.
Over 50 percent of all dialysis patients across the country are given one of these drugs, leaving them at a six-fold increased risk of cardiopulmonary arrest and sudden cardiac death.
If either of these products have been used in your dialysis treatment, it is crucial that you speak to an attorney as soon as possible.

Risks and Side-Effects of GranuFlo and NaturaLyte
GranuFlo and NaturaLyte are both chemical products used in dialysis machines to help clean the blood of patients with impaired kidneys. The ingredients in these products are intended to prevent the buildup of dangerous acids that are naturally removed by properly functioning kidneys.
GranuFlo and NaturaLyte patients have reported suffering from:
- Sudden cardiac death
- Cardiovascular death
- Low blood pressure
- Cardiac arrhythmia
- Heart attack
- Cardiopulmonary arrest
Fresenium Medical Care was Aware of Risks
On March 29, 2012, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a Class 1 recall of both GranuFlo and NaturaLyte. A Class 1 recall is the most serious type of recall as it involves situations where there is a reasonable probability of adverse health consequences or death.
Between January 1 and December 31, 2010, Fresenium Medical Care conducted a case-control study that evaluated risk factors in dialysis patients who suffered from cardiopulmonary arrest in FMC facilities compared to other dialysis patients in the same facilities.
This study found that 841 patients in 667 FMC facilities had cardiopulmonary arrests resulting in their death. Data from these 941 patients showed that their risk of cardiopulmonary arrest was up to six times higher if they had an elevated bicarbonate level before undergoing dialysis treatment.
Fresenium Medical Care sent an internal memo to FMCs doctors and dialysis facilities, recommending action for patients with elevated pre-dialysis bicarbonate levels. They failed to inform those outside of FMC, however. They only shared knowledge of the risk after the internal memo had been leaked to the FDA.

I’ve been working at Phillips Law Group for nearly four years and I can confidently say this is the best personal injury firm in Arizona to work for. The firm is the best for numerous reasons but to start, Phillips Law Group gives employees opportunities for promotions and growth. I started working within the settlement department, moved to a paralegal assistant and grew to be a pre-litigation paralegal with my own case load. Each attorney I have worked for is extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and easy to talk to. Secondly, I love how Phillips Law shows appreciation for employees. They host Friday Zoom Huddles giving out PTO, goodie bags, special shout outs, bonuses and gift cards. They also host extravagant holiday parties and fun contests during the Holidays! Lastly, the firm cares about giving back to the community, which is a trait I value as well. It’s rewarding to see a fast paced firm taking time out of their busy day to pay it forward. I would highly recommend working at Phillips Law Group!
Phillips law group is the best around!
Liz Gonzales was great!!!!
I want to thank attorneys Tim and Robert and the paralegal Bethany for all they had done on my case. They were all empathetic, knowledgeable and professional. All my questions were answered, emails returned in a timely matter, and promises fulfilled. I recommend Phillips Law Group if you need help with your injury case.
Phillips Law Group has a proven track record of success. Juan Roque, in particular, is integral to that. He works with integrity, compassion, and an undefeated optimism that makes him a valuable asset.
I tried a few previous law firms and none would take my car accident case with confidence they could get my anything. Phillips law group took my case and although it took around 4 years to get this case settled as I was in treatment, they never let up with insurance adjusters and they got me as much money as possible. They worked hard for me and advocated for me. Shoutout to key individuals who worked my case nonstop of the years, Robert Ross & Jasmine, you are AMAZING!
Two family members were in a bad wreck a couple of years ago, and as a result called Phillips Law to represent them. Montana Thompson was the attorney assigned to the case with the help of Nemo Farr as legal assistant. Mr. Thompson litigated a very generous settlement for both my stepdaughter and her son. Because my grandson is a minor, I decided to act as conservator for him to ensure the settlement was safe and secure. Montana helped with that process, but it was Nemo who went way above and beyond the call in finding a financial institution to use for the restricted account. There were some glitches in that process but Nemo helped navigate them with a calm expertise which belies his age. I would consider them both great representatives of the level of commitment to their clients and assets to their firm.
I would like to thank Vanessa Rodriguez for helping me with my case because I was in total shock about the accident. She had listened to all my concerns and had answered every question I had . She was great !!!
Definitely recommend! Awesome
