- Roundup Lawsuit | Weed Killer | Phillips Law Group
On August 10, 2018, a California jury ruled that Monsanto’s Roundup weed killer caused a former school groundskeeper to develop terminal cancer. The jury ruled that Monsanto knew or should have known about the risks of this product.
The former groundskeeper was awarded $289 million in compensatory and punitive damages ”“ punitive damages are not meant to compensate for damages but to punish the liable party and help prevent others from engaging in similar conduct.
This was the first Roundup lawsuit to go to trial ”“ thousands of lawsuits have been filed by victims and loved ones alleging the weed killer gave them cancer. Monsanto has continued to deny these claims and seeks to appeal this latest verdict.
If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma or another form of cancer after using Roundup, you may be able to file a lawsuit against Monsanto to pursue compensation.

How Does the Roundup Weed Killer Work?
Roundup weed killer is a popular herbicide manufactured by the agricultural giant Monsanto. It was first introduced into the market in 1974 and is commonly used by farmers, landscapers and homeowners alike on lawns, gardens and fields.
The active ingredient in Roundup is glyphosate, a broad-spectrum and non-selective herbicide designed to be toxic to plants. It kills most plants it comes in contact with right down to the root. Glyphosate can also be found in many other herbicides.
Roundup weed killer is applied by spraying the product onto the leaves. Glyphosate works its way through the plant destroying any unwanted weeds. It takes between 10 to 30 minutes for the treated area to dry. The majority of Roundup products deliver visible results in several hours.
Roundup Cancer Risks
Several studies and thousands of lawsuits that have been filed have linked use of Roundup with serious health complications, including an increased risk of developing cancer, such as:
- Burkitt lymphoma
- B-cell lymphoma
- Mantle cell lymphoma
- Follicular lymphoma
- Marginal zone b-cell lymphoma
One of the most common forms of cancer linked to Roundup is non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, also referred to as NHL. It is a type of cancer that starts in the white blood cells in the body’s immune system. When the body produces too many of these cells, cancerous tumors start to develop and spread. People diagnosed with this disease often develop cancerous white blood cells in their lymph nodes, but it can spread to other parts of the lymphatic system including the lymphatic vessels, tonsils, spleen and bone marrow.
Common symptoms of NHL and other types of cancer linked to Roundup may include:
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Belly pain or swelling
- Fever
- Night sweats
- Unexplained weight loss
- Chronic fatigue
- Chest pain
- Trouble breathing
If you experience any of these symptoms, seek medical treatment right away. If you have cancer, you want to begin treating it as soon as possible because it may be easier to treat in the early stages. A qualified medical professional can review your symptoms and work to determine what is going on and what treatments to use.
If you do have cancer, treatment can painful, debilitating and invasive. You may need to go through procedures such as chemotherapy, radiation treatment, immunotherapy and stem-cell transplants. These treatments can be very expensive and cause tremendous pain and suffering. They can also make it difficult to work to support yourself and your family.
This is why if you have been exposed to Roundup and you think it may have caused you to develop cancer, it is in your best interest to seek legal representation as soon as possible. Consult a defective product lawyer attorney at our firm to discuss your case during a free consultation. You may be entitled to compensation through filing a Roundup lawsuit. This could not only cover current medical expenses and other damages, but also damages you suffer in the future.

Studies on the Risks of Roundup
Monsanto points to various studies that show no link between Roundup and cancer, including studies funded by the company itself. However, there are many other studies that have linked the weed killer to serious health issues like cancer.
March 1999
According to a study published in the American Cancer Society journal Cancer, there is an increased risk for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma among people exposed to herbicides and fungicides.
July 2008
The International Journal of Cancer published a similar study nearly a decade later. Glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, was associated with a significant increase in the risk of developing lymphoma.
May 2015
In 2015, the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) issued a warning about the potential link between Roundup and cancer. The data collected by a group of cancer researchers cited the active ingredient glyphosate as being probably carcinogenic or cancer-causing to people. The agency based this finding on numerous studies of exposure to this chemical among human beings.
October 2017
Looking at the long-term effects of Roundup, a study published in The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) found that the average levels of glyphosate in older adults’ urine increased between 1993 and 2016. Samples were taken from older adult farmers living in Southern California between 1993 and 2016 who were in direct contact with the herbicide. The study also found that genetically modified crops contained glyphosate when they were harvested.

It’s an Honor and a Privilege to work for a company that cares about its employees and clients for 12 years. I’ve seen Management go out of their way to help someone whether it’s a personal matter or work related. I am also reminded of many occasions where a Client needed urgent help and we as a Team were able to get the person immediate assistance. At Phillips Law we make that happen through Teamwork and a dedication to our profession. I’ve had numerous jobs in several other fields, those were just jobs. This is a home. Many of us have been here for quite a few years, it feels like one large extended family.

Although my accident was fortunately not a major one, The Phillips Law Group AZ treated it as such. Their staff, specifically Mr Juan Roque was very professional, courteous and most importantly very informative. Mr Roque's attentive service was phenomenal and I highly recommend this firm!

My Attorney Sean Davis and his paralegal Hannah Dustin worked on my case. They listened to the problems that I was having with my case and they both got right to work. First they found me a doctor that actually listened to my problems from my car accident and worked quickly to form a plan that was comfortable for me and the doctor. The doctor was the best and after a couple of procedures the pain in my neck was gone. Behind the scenes Sean and Hannah were working hard to get my case settled with the insurance company. They kept in contact with me on all aspects of my case. They settled my case much faster than I expected and for more than I was expecting. If you want two real professional legal people to work on your case, I would highly recommend Sean and Hannah to you. I cannot say enough nice things about these two. Thank you so much, Rickey Hart .

Working at Phillips Law Group has been great the 1st few years in I noticed how well organized and run this Firm was from Intake to Settlement the Client has the expertise of a staff member uniquely qualified for the particular stage of each Clients claim and all other Law firms try to emulate what we do here but none quite get it right because they lack one major component “Compassion”. We are a FAMILY not just a group of people/employees. We care deeply about each other and our clients’ we are considerate, compassionate and make sure that all our Clients’ needs are met from beginning to end. That’s because we treat our clients just like we treat each other. Nothing like walking through the office and saying Hello to fellow employees who always seem to be smiling. 16yrs in and it only seems to be getting better.

Many companies talk about teamwork but few practice it. Many companies talk about an employee friendly environment but few actually provide it. At Phillips Law Group the foundation of our success is making sure we work as a team and that we work in an environment that allows everyone to thrive and be at their best every day. Our firm understands that in order for the client to have a great experience the people responsible for that client’s case must be given all the necessary tools and encouragement to make that happen. That’s the Phillips Way. As a manager of this firm in charge of several employees as well as directly affecting the client’s experience I take tremendous pride in saying we live by these premises and we work hard to build on them and make them better every day. This is an amazing place because it has amazing people working here!

My review is for Kathy Hudson a legal assistant at the law firm. She is great! She is very professional and a fair based person. She was never rude to me and always called me back. She listened to me and had my best interest as number 1. Mr Nasir who is a supervisor at law firm also was very professional and helpful. Not sure if spelling his name correctly but sorry if not. As far as mr Ross and the lady that runs the front desk reception I would say they are the most unprofessional and rude people I have met at a law firm in my life especially beings they were representing me. But Kathy made it overall a better experience. Thx Kathy.
