Cipro Comes Under Scrutiny from FDA

Cipro is a powerful antibiotic drug thats manufactured by Bayer, and for years its been one of the leading medications of its type, which in medical terms is known as flouroquinolone drugs, in its class of medication. However, recent news has been released thats bringing unwanted attention to both Cipro and Bayer.

Cipro is a powerful form of antibiotic medication thats usually used to help patients fight particularly damaging infections such as urinary tract infections. In general, the results have been positive, but Cipro may not enjoy the well-known status it does if not for the scares that followed 9/11 in the United States.

As most of us remember, after the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, D.C., a series of letters were sent around the country containing anthrax antibodies, and a few people even contracted the disease as a result. Cipro was used to fight this condition, and it was successful in doing so. In fact, it was so successful that the US government has stores of Cipro on-hand in case there are additional attacks of this nature to help stem the tide of any would-be epidemic.

Unfortunately, problems also began to arise regarding Cipro. Reports began to surface regarding the tendency for those who have used Cipro to develop painful conditions like tendonitis and even more serious cases of tendon ruptures. Due in large part to steps taken by consumer advocacy groups, the FDA recently issued a statement that Cipro would now require a Black Box warning on all labels of Cipro that describe the potential risk for the development of these side effects.
