Costco Recalls Cantaloupe Because of Salmonella Concerns
Costco is one of the leading retailers in the United States, especially in the west because of its ability to provide items at lower prices and generally with high levels of quality. However, like any other retailer, Costco can run into problems with certain items, particularly produce. Unfortunately, such appears to be the case with a recent Costco recall that was initiated regarding cantaloupes. Those who have purchased this fruit from a Costco outlet somewhere in the west recently are advised to return it or to avoid consuming it.
According to several reports, this Costco recall was initiated because of concerns regarding the presence of salmonella in several cases of Del Monte Fresh melons. These melons originate from a farm in Guatemala and were distributed to Costco warehouses across the western United States. The products were offered for sale between March 10 and March 21, and they were sold in three-count packages with the Del Monte logo attached. Consumers should avoid using these products at all costs.
Salmonella panama is the specific form of contamination that was found in these defective melons, and to date approximately one dozen cases of salmonella have been reported as a result of using these products. Salmonella panama is a particularly troubling form of salmonella, as it can lead to extremely serious and sometimes fatal infections. This is particularly true of consumers who are most vulnerable to this type of harm, including those who are older, those who are already struggling with a suppressed immune system and small children.

Perhaps one of the most problematic aspects of this type of a situation is that when people consume tainted products and fall seriously ill, they often are unsure as to what could have caused the problem in the first place. Not only can tracing this problem back to its source be extremely difficult, but even if that's accomplished the next step of proving that the parties responsible for this harm should be held liable is another serious challenge.
