Chicago police officer, Sgt. Jeffrey Allen has filed a federal lawsuit against the city of Chicago for overtime pay. Sgt. Allen claims that he should be paid overtime for answering work-related phone calls and emails at home on his department issued Blackberry.
His attorney, Paul Geiger believes that If they have a half hour phone call outside of work hours to a superior about a search warrant they are gonna work on the next day, that is something that needs to be paid for.
Labor law experts note that the current labor laws are running behind technology. If Sgt. Allen wins his lawsuit, it could result in millions of dollars in back pay.
