Elderly Safford Couple Killed in Crash With Police Car

A Safford couple were killed in a car crash near the San Carlos Apache Airport on Friday. 79-year-old Thomas Biggs and his wife Susan, 74, were fatally injured in a two-vehicle collision on U.S. Highway 70. The crash occurred about five miles southeast of the San Carlos Apache Airport on Friday, Aug. 14th.

According to reports, a San Carlos police officer was traveling westbound on US-70 and began to make a U-turn. A passenger car, driven by Susan Biggs, was traveling eastbound on US-70 and crashed into the front right corner of the unmarked police vehicle. After colliding with the Biggs’ car, the police vehicle rolled over onto its roof. The couple’s car traveled off the south side of the highway and into a dirt area.

Thomas died at the accident scene, and Susan later succumbed to her injuries after being transported to a nearby hospital. The officer was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Arizona’s Department of Public Safety (DPS). The accident shut down Highway 70 for roughly eight hours.
