According to CBS 5, 35-year-old Christopher Alonzo was driving on SR-85 on Saturday afternoon when he lost control of his vehicle near Buckeye, causing the vehicle to drift off the side of the roadway.

The vehicle then skidded back across two lanes and into a canal before rolling over, ejecting three children and Alonzo’s wife.

One of the children who was thrown from the car was pronounced dead at the scene. Five others were rushed to Phoenix Children’s Hospital in serious condition. The condition of Alonzo’s wife is unclear at this time.

Troopers say Alonzo showed signs of intoxication at the hospital after the crash. Two of the children told them that Alonzo and his wife had been drinking and had been involved in a physical altercation in the vehicle’s front seat.

Alonzo was arrested the following day, and is facing charges of endangerment, aggravated assault with serious physical injury, and reckless manslaughter.
