Off-Duty Police Officer Killed in Motorcycle Crash

A northern Arizona police officer was killed in an off-duty motorcycle accident on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 6th. Commander Jody Makuch of the Cottonwood Police Department was the victim, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

According to the department, Makuch was riding his motorcycle on State Route 89A at Willard Street in Cottonwood, Arizona when he was struck head-on by a car.According to officials, Jason Howard Engel was traveling southbound when he allegedly ran a red light, swerved to avoid hitting a car, and then struck Makuch head-on. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Engel was jailed on a manslaughter charge, and additional charges are pending. The Arizona Department of Public Safety is investigating the crash. Makuch had been with Cottonwood Police Department since 2000 and was promoted to commander in 2009.
