Report Details Phoenix’s Most Dangerous Intersections

dangerous intersection in phoenixThe City of Phoenix Street Transportation Department has released its 2014 Comprehensive Traffic Collision Summary and it details the most dangerous intersections in the city.

Overall, in the city of Phoenix, nearly 26,000 accidents were reported in one year along with 13,682 injuries and 160 fatalities. The number of auto accidents caused by drivers running a red light or stop sign increased, however, alcohol-related accidents decreased.

The intersections with the most accidents include:

  • 67th Avenue and Indian School
  • 27th Avenue and Camelback Road
  • 43rd Avenue and Thomas Road
  • 67th Avenue and McDowell Road
  • 43rd Avenue and Northern

Sixty-one crashes were reported at the intersection at 67th Avenue and Indian School Road. At 44th and Thomas Road and Mohave and 7th Street, the most red light runners were reported.

According to the traffic safety sector of the city’s streets department, an increasing number of accidents correlates with the economy. As gas prices began to drop, more people began driving again, which led to more crashes. Though the number of accidents increased between 2013 and 2014, the amount is still much less than 2006 when more than 35,000 wrecks were reported.

Approximately 88 percent of the accidents in the area were caused by drivers speeding or failing to yield. About eight percent were the result of inattentive drivers.

As for fatal accidents, the majority involved pedestrians. In fact, the number of pedestrian collisions have increased every year since 2010 with a 19.3 percent increase between 2010 and 2014. In 40 percent of these accidents, the pedestrian did not contribute to the crash. The department has been working on installing safer pedestrian crossings at various intersections.
