Driver Involved in Deadly Tucson Collison Taken to Jail

TUCSON, AZ – A Tucson man is in custody Wednesday after being released from the hospital following a suspected drunk driving crash that killed another motorist.

According to KOLD, Douglas Phillip Bender is facing a number of charges, including second-degree murder, that stem from an October 9th collision that killed 20-year-old Adam Ballerstein.

Police say the accident occurred when Bender, 47, was traveling at a high rate of speed within the 8000 block of East Tanque Verde Rd., crossed the center median, and collided with Ballerstein’s Hyundai Sonata. Bender was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition, while officials pronounced Ballerstein dead at the scene.

Bender is currently being held in the Pima County Jail.
