Bicyclist Struck, Killed in Tempe Hit-and-Run

TEMPE, AZ – Police arrested a man they say struck and killed a bicyclist at an intersection in south Tempe on Friday, AZ Family reports.

Police allege that Raul Meza Portillo hit the bicyclist at about 7:30 p.m., as he was making a left turn from Mill Avenue onto Baseline Road. Portillo left the scene without stopping, but not before his pickup truck had dragged the 41-year-old woman for several hundred feet.

The victim was taken to an area hospital, where she later died. She had not been identified as of Saturday morning.

Authorities found Portillo at his nearby home at about 1 a.m. on Saturday. They believe he had been drinking before they arrived, as he showed signs of impairment, but have not determined whether Portillo was drunk at the time of the collision.

Police charged him with leaving the scene of the crash and second-degree murder. This investigation is ongoing.
