Arizona School Bus Failure Rate Doubled from 2013-2015
September 19, 2016
According to a recent investigation by The Arizona Republic, nearly three of 10 school buses did not pass 2015 safety inspections due to major defects.
The inspection failure rate in 2015 was almost double what it was in 2013, jumping from 15.4 to around 29 percent.
Arizona school buses now have one of the highest inspection-failure rates in the country, with other states having significantly lower rates, including California at 2.7 percent, Utah at 12 percent and New Mexico at 15 percent.
Some of the major defects that caused Arizona school buses to fail inspection include:
- Emergency brakes that did not work well
- Seats that were not secured or had exposed steel frames
- Air leaks in brakes
- Emergency doors that did not function
- Nonexistent fire extinguishers
- Exposed electrical wiring in the air conditioning systems
- Bumpers that were falling off
- Cracked bus axles
Officials from school districts with high inspection-failure rates claim that decreased state funding is to blame, as it makes it tougher to replace old buses with new ones.
However, The Arizona Republic investigation revealed that school districts that had increased funding still experienced high failure rates and that more capital did not equate to lower inspection failures.
Another problem is that mechanics who are charged with fixing defective buses are being asked to drive buses due to bus driver shortages. This means that it takes longer for buses to get fixed.
If your child has been injured on a school bus due to a negligent bus driver, school district or other entity, you may be able to recover compensation for medical bills, pain and suffering, and other expenses.

Working at Phillips Law Group has been great the 1st few years in I noticed how well organized and run this Firm was from Intake to Settlement the Client has the expertise of a staff member uniquely qualified for the particular stage of each Clients claim and all other Law firms try to emulate what we do here but none quite get it right because they lack one major component “Compassion”. We are a FAMILY not just a group of people/employees. We care deeply about each other and our clients’ we are considerate, compassionate and make sure that all our Clients’ needs are met from beginning to end. That’s because we treat our clients just like we treat each other. Nothing like walking through the office and saying Hello to fellow employees who always seem to be smiling. 16yrs in and it only seems to be getting better.
Two family members were in a bad wreck a couple of years ago, and as a result called Phillips Law to represent them. Montana Thompson was the attorney assigned to the case with the help of Nemo Farr as legal assistant. Mr. Thompson litigated a very generous settlement for both my stepdaughter and her son. Because my grandson is a minor, I decided to act as conservator for him to ensure the settlement was safe and secure. Montana helped with that process, but it was Nemo who went way above and beyond the call in finding a financial institution to use for the restricted account. There were some glitches in that process but Nemo helped navigate them with a calm expertise which belies his age. I would consider them both great representatives of the level of commitment to their clients and assets to their firm.
I enjoy my work day here at Phillips Law Group and generally speaking I love my clients. Every day brings a new client or task to keep me on my toes. Administration keeps open communication and is hilarious most of the time! I love the way we celebrate FRIDAY, holidays and birthdays and how everything is so competitive. All in all I’m so fortunate to be here and I enjoy what I do.
I would like to thank Vanessa Rodriguez for helping me with my case because I was in total shock about the accident. She had listened to all my concerns and had answered every question I had . She was great !!!

Great experience! Took care of pretty much everything, and I always felt like I want in good hands. Caroline Fa. was also a great help with everything. She always returned my calls and I never felt unheard. Even after my case she would still help me with my insurance documents.
I have been with Phillips Law Group for a little over a year and I have learned what teamwork and family in a workplace looks like. There is always someone around to lend a helping hand, which is something I appreciate and cherish. I feel a sense of joy coming to work every day because of my co-workers as well as being able to help people in what can be a scary and stressful situation. I currently work as a Litigation Legal Assistant with an amazing team. When I started here, I was not very knowledgeable in personal injury. I was lucky to have been placed with an amazing team who was willing to take time to teach and pass on some great skills that have been a huge aid in helping me be successful in my position. I would recommend working here at Phillips Law Group, because they care about their employees and there is so much room for growth.
