Arizona has the Most Aggressive Drivers in U.S.

angry motoristTwo of Arizona’s cities, Phoenix and Tucson, have been named as the leading cities with the most aggressive drivers in the U.S.

The findings were reported in a studyconducted by Automatic, a San Francisco-based connected car company.

Automatic concluded that drivers in Phoenix had the highest levels of aggression on both highways and city roads. Tucson ranked second in the nation for city road aggression.

Automatic collected its data by creating an “acceleration profile” of each driver in its user base. Each driver’s “acceleration profile” was created based on his or her level of acceleration and how often the brakes were applied during a selected period of time.

AAA Study Reveals Aggressive Driving is a Common Concern

A 2016 study conducted by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety revealed that national opinion for the aggressive driving is a widespread concern.

The study included a survey of U.S. drivers and found that nearly two in three participants believe the problem of aggressive driving has increased in the past three years, while nine out of ten drivers believe road rage poses a threat to their safety.

Interestingly, 78 percent of those surveyed also admitted to engaging in road rage activities in the past year. These activities may include:

  • Brake checking other drivers
  • Swerving in and out of traffic
  • Speeding
  • Tailgating
  • Changing lanes without signaling
  • Blocking cars that are attempting to pass or change lanes

These activities and many others can lead to serious accidents that cause injuries or even death.

How Arizona is Addressing the Challenge

The Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) has recognized the problem and has taken steps to reduce road rage and dangerous driving behaviors by employing tactics, such as “bait cars” to target aggressive drivers.

The DPS has also created “safety corridors” on sections of Valley freeways that enforce a zero-tolerance policy on speeding and aggressive driving.

Aggressive driving in Arizona has created a widespread danger to public safety and can cause severe accidents that result in victims being injured or killed.
