Benicar, a widely prescribed blood pressure medication, has been linked to several serious side effects including celiac disease-like symptoms, heart attacks, and death.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently required Benicars manufacturer to include warnings about these side effects on the drugs label. If you took Benicar before these changes, you may be able to recover compensation for your unexpected injuries. The attorneys at Phillips Law Group would like to speak with you about your injuries, and are here to help you determine if you have a claim.
Several studies have shown that Benicar can be responsible for sprue-like enteropathy in patients. This condition, which mimics celiac disease, occurred often enough that the FDA required the drugs manufacturer to change the warning label and advise patients of the risk of developing the condition. Sprue-like enteropathy causes multiple digestive issues, including:
People suffering from the side effects of Benicar may have issues absorbing nutrients or fully digesting their food. In many cases, this condition is misdiagnosed as celiac disease or a severe intolerance to glutenunlike celiac disease, however, removing gluten from the diet will not relieve the symptoms. Only when treatment with Benicar is stopped will a patient receive relief.
In June of 2014, the FDA added a new requirement that that the results of several studies be added to Benicars warning label. The results of some of these studies showed a link between high doses of Benicar and an increased risk of death in patients with diabetes. Other studies showed a decreased likelihood of non-fatal heart attacks in patients who were taking the medication.
As a result of these conflicting studies, the FDA believes that the benefits of Benicar outweigh the risks in patients with high blood pressure. Regardless, patients taking Benicar should be aware of the possibility of cardiac events associated with the medication.
Physicians have been prescribing Benicar for millions of patients since its release in 2002. However, the new warnings about serious potential side effects have only been released within the past year. Patients who took Benicar without any notice of these potential complications may have the right to recover damages for any harmful side effect they suffered.
