Tequin® Recall

BMS recently announced its plans to halt production and sales of Tequin®. In February of 2006, the Food and Drug Administration added side effect warnings to Tequin® labeling to inform consumers about the serious blood sugar risks posed by the drug.

Tequin®, prescribed to over a million people in 2005, has been linked to 388 cases of low and high blood sugar in the United States. According to the consumer interest group Public Citizen, 159 patients have required hospitalization and 20 people have died due to serious Tequin® blood glucose abnormalities.

BMS has decided to stop production of Tequin®, however, the drug will still be in circulation in hospitals and pharmacies around the U.S. Existing stock will not be pulled from the shelves, imposing additional risks to consumers.
