Drop-Side Stork Craft Crib Recall – The Dangers Revealed

Unfortunately, these drop-side cribs have also been the target of much in the way of scrutiny from consumers who have been harmed, government officials in more than one country and defective products lawyers.  There have been several problems that have been encountered, but the recall announced recently centers on what’s being termed a manufacturing problem.

Stork Craft Manufacturing has initiated what is believed to be the largest crib recall in the history of the United States because of the tendency for the drop sides on these cribs to fail.  Specifically, these drop sides have shown a troubling tendency to either fall off altogether or to come loose and be pushed out from the inside because of the pressure applied by the sleeping infant when he or she rolls over onto the side of the rail. 

Overall, the recall affects more than 2 million units of drop-side cribs sold, and that includes more than 1.1 million units in the United States and approximately one million units in Canada.  These drop-side cribs are sold in retail outlets across the country that include BJ’s Wholesale Club, J.C. Penney, Kmart, Meijer, Sears, USA Baby, and Wal-Mart stores and online at Amazon.com, Babiesrus.com, Costco.com, Target.com, and Walmart.com.  The models at issue were sold between January of 1993 and October of 2009, and their retail price ranged from $100 to $400, depending on the specific model.

According to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the models affected by this drop-side crib recall include:

“Stork Craft cribs with manufacturing and distribution dates between January 1993 and October 2009. This recall also includes Stork Craft cribs with the Fisher-Price logo that have manufacturing dates between October 1997 and December 2004. The Stork Craft cribs with the Fisher-Price logo were first sold in the U.S. in July 1998 and in Canada in September 1998. The cribs were sold in various styles and finishes. The manufacture date, model number, crib name, country of origin, and the firm’s name, address, and contact information are located on the assembly instruction sheet attached to the mattress support board. The firm’s insignia “storkcraft baby” or “storkling” is inscribed on the drop-side teething rail of some cribs. In Stork Craft cribs that contain the “Fisher-Price” logo, this logo can be found on the crib’s teething rail, in the manufacturer’s instructions, on the assembly instruction sheet attached to the mattress support board, and on the end panels of the Twinkle-Twinkle and Crystal crib models.”

Crib Recall – The Damage of Stork Craft Crib Failure

The overriding reason that this enormous recall has been initiated is due to reports of statistics that are nothing less than daunting.  According to official reports, at least four infants have suffocated when they rolled over onto the side of the mattress and pushed out the drop side of the crib, creating a space large enough to fall into but too small to maneuver.  As a result, these four infants died of suffocation. 

In addition to the four deaths, officials have received at least 110 reports of infants who were seriously injured either because of the space created when rolling into the drop side or because the drop side fell off completely, leading to the obvious danger of the child falling out of the crib and sustaining serious injuries.
