FDA Meets to Discuss Safety of Metal Hip Implants
A Twp day meeting is being held by the Food and Drug Administration to discuss the safety metal on metal hip implants and the years of patients' reports on adverse effects which sometimes requires removal of the devices.
Physicians started favoring the metal on metal hips in the last decade. According to laboratory tests, the devices would be more resistant to wear than ceramic or plastic hips.
Unfortunately, recent data collected by surgeons in the U.K and other places exhibits some metal implants are more likely to require corrective surgery than traditional implants. The FDA will discuss the evidence and recommend safety measures to the panel of experts.
