Byetta, Januvia, Janumet, & Victoza Linked to Pancreatic Cancer

Diabetes medication is an enormous market. Having over $40 billion in annual sales in the United States gives the manufactures of these drugs the upper hand to falsely advertise and make a profit. A recent examination conducted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) revealed that a number of diabetes drugs including Byetta, Januvia, Janmet, and Victoza have been linked to the development of pancreatic cancer.

Using tissue samples from a number of patients who had been taking these medications and died due to a variety of causes the Drug Safety Communication was able to make a few conclusions. The pancreatic tissue that was samples revealed inflammation and cellular change. These aspects of pancreatic tissue are often the changes that pave the way for cancer.

Patients with Type 2 diabetes are given drugs that serve to mimic the natural hormones which fuel insulin production following a meal; these drugs are in the incretin mimetic class. The following are all potentially dangerous drugs:

  • Byetta and Bydureon (exenatide)
  • Januvia, Janumet, Janumet XR, and Juvisync (sitagliptin)
  • Victoza (liraglutide)
  • Nesina, Kazano, and Oseni (alogliptin)
  • Tradjenta and Jentadueto (linagliptin)
  • Onglyza and Kombiglyze XR (saxagliptin)

When a patient has pancreatisits the pancreas inflames and a number of serious complications may arise. From kidney failure to difficulty breathing, patients may be at serious risk following the use of the above drugs. The FDA made the following statement, FDA has not concluded these drugs may cause or contribute to the development of pancreatic cancer. At this time, patients should continue to take their medicine as directed until they talk to their health care professional.

Those who have taken these diabetes drugs may be at double the risk of developing acute pancreatitis. If you or a loved has experienced any adverse side effects following the use of Byetta, Januvia, Janumet, or Victoza, may be entitled to compensation.
