Garbage Truck Accident Kills Driver, Injures Passenger

ambulanceThere was a fatal truck accident on Route 87 last Thursday morning involving a garbage truck that collided with a car, sending the car off the road. Truck accidents often cause deaths and serious injuries because these vehicles are very large and they do not maneuver easily or quickly in traffic.

In last Thursday’s accident, the driver of the car ignored a stop sign and entered an intersection in front of the garbage truck, which killed the driver after striking the car on the passenger side. The passenger was airlifted to Chandler Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the garbage truck was not hurt.

Authorities do not suspect that impairment was a factor in the crash, according to Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman Quentin Mehr.

The accident happened at about 3:45 a.m. near the junction of SR 87 and State Route 287. Authorities closed that stretch of road for a few hours to investigate the accident.

Dangers of Truck Accidents

When a car crashes into a truck, the car will usually sustain the most property damage, while the people inside the car usually sustain the more serious injuries. These accidents can cause spinal cord injuries, broken bones and internal injuries.

While some accidents are caused by the driver of the car, some are caused by the negligence of the truck driver, who may have been on the road for many hours without any rest. Truck drivers may also skip routine inspections or preventative safety measures, which puts other drivers at risk.
