According to CBS News, federal health official have confirmed 33 cases of a rare fungal eye infection across 7 states. All of the patients had undergone some type of eye procedure, including surgery or injections. The CDC reports that 23 people had some degree of vision loss after the infection and 24 people had to undergo another eye surgery.

Health officials traced many of the cases to a dye and an injection including triamcinolone and other products from Franck’s Compounding Lab in Ocala. The Food and Drug Administration tested unopened bottles and unused syringes of the dye collected, finding several bacterial and fungal species.

California health officials first notified the CDC after several patients developed eye infections in March. That same month Franck’s pharmacy recalled dye lots and triamcinolone.

The pharmacy was under scrutiny in 2009 after 21 polo horses died before a championship match. The horses had been given a cocktail of minerals and vitamins compounded by Franck’s pharmacy. Their deaths were blamed on an overdose of minerals.

More than a 100 former NFL players are suing the NFL over head injuries. In the lawsuit the former football players claim that league failed, "to take reasonable steps necessary to protect players from devastating head injuries. Moreover, the NFL has downplayed and misrepresented the issues and misled players concerning the risks associated with concussions."

The lawsuit also cites recent research that links concussions to chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a neurodegenerative disease that results in Alzheimer's-like symptoms, including memory loss and mood swings. According to CNN, CTE results only from repeated blows to the head, and can be diagnosed only after death.

If you or a loved one has sustained a serious head injury due to another entity's negligence, you may be eligible to file a lawsuit. Contact the injury attorneys at Phillips Law Group to discuss your legal options.

Last year Athena Hohenberg, a San Diego mother of a four-year-old girl, filed a class-action lawsuit against Ferrero USA, the makers of Nutella for false advertising. Nutella is a sweet chocolate spread that is full of sugar and palm oil. Hohenberg claims that she was shocked to learn that Nutella, is not that much healthier than a candy bar. She argued that the product’s television ads falsely promoted the spread as a “healthy” breakfast option. Hohenberg claimed that she never would have purchased the product for her family if she knew how unhealthy it was.

According to ABC News, Ferrero has settled the lawsuit for $3 million; 2.5 million will be divided among consumers. Anyone who bought Nutella from Jan. 1, 2008 to Feb. 3, 2012 can file a claim. Consumers can receive $4 for every jar of Nutella purchased during that time frame; there is a $20 maximum per household. Nutella has also agreed to change its television ads, website and marketing claims.

One-third of employed U.S. workers are getting less than 6 hours of sleep a night, according to a recent study done by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The National Sleep Foundation recommends adults get 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night. Workers that are sleep-deprived are more likely to be injured on the job and make mistakes that could injure their co-workers. Over 40 percent of night shift workers report getting less than six hours of sleep.  Almost 70 percent of workers in the transportation and warehousing industries are sleep-deprived.

HealthDay News reports that employers can promote good sleep habits by not starting shifts too early in the morning.
